Bitaxe Gamma – Complete Setup Guide
If you’ve just purchased a Bitaxe Gamma – congratulations! You’re one step closer to efficient, open-source Bitcoin mining. This guide walks you through everything you need to get your Bitaxe Gamma up and running quickly and smoothly.
This guide is tailored specifically for Bitaxe Gamma users in the UK and beyond.
What You’ll Need
Before getting started, make sure you have the following:
- Your Bitaxe Gamma
- A reliable 5V DC power supply
- A 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
- Access to a Bitcoin mining pool (we recommend Public Pool)
- A device with a web browser (laptop, desktop, or smartphone) for configuration
Note: This guide specifically applies to firmware version V2.9.0.
Important Safety Notes
- Power Supply: Only use a verified 5V DC power supply. Using anything else may damage the device.
- Ventilation: ASICs generate heat during mining. Operate your Bitaxe Gamma in a dry, well-ventilated area to prevent overheating.
- Overheat Protection: The device includes built-in thermal protection. If temperatures exceed safe limits, it will automatically enter “Overheat Mode.”
- Electrical Safety: Keep the device away from water or damp areas. Always unplug before performing any maintenance.
- Keep Away from Children: The unit gets hot during use and should be kept out of reach of children and pets.
Step 1: Confirm the Screen is Properly Attached
Before powering on the unit, make sure the screen is securely connected and hasn’t come loose during shipping.
Having display issues? Try the following:
- Unplug the Bitaxe from power.
- Gently remove the screen by pulling from the right-hand side.
- Slightly bend the pins outward.
- Reinsert the screen carefully and reconnect power.
Note: At Bitaxe UK, we solder the screen in place during assembly to minimise the chance of this issue occurring. However, it’s still worth checking if you’re experiencing display problems.
Step 2: Power Up the Miner
Connect your Bitaxe Gamma to power using a 5V DC power adapter only.
Once powered on, the Bitaxe will run through a startup sequence. When finished, it will display a Wi-Fi network name on the screen, such as “Bitaxe_XXXX”, where XXXX
is the unique identifier for your device.
Step 3: Connect to the Miner via Wi-Fi
Using your phone or computer, open your Wi-Fi settings.
- Connect to the network named “Bitaxe_XXXX”, where
XXXX
is the unique identifier displayed on your Bitaxe screen. - If prompted about connecting without internet, select YES or Continue.
When the Bitaxe Wi-Fi portal opens, enter the following:
- Worker Name: Choose a unique name for this device — it helps you identify and track it later.
- Wi-Fi ID: Enter your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi SSID (network name).
- Wi-Fi Password: Enter your password carefully — it is case sensitive.
- Click Save, then Restart. The Bitaxe will reboot and attempt to join your network.
Note: If you’re having trouble accessing the Bitaxe setup page, please click here for guidance on how to resolve the issue.
Step 4: Access the AxeOS Interface
Enter the IP address shown on the Bitaxe screen into your browser’s address bar.
Tip: If you lose track of the device’s IP after switching networks, just wait — the screen will cycle and display the IP address again.
Step 5: Configure Mining Pool Settings
In the AxeOS interface, click the Settings tab ( ☰ ) and select Pool:
-
Stratum Host: Enter the mining pool URL (exclude
stratum+tcp://
). - Stratum Port: Enter the port number provided by your mining pool.
-
User: Enter your on-chain Bitcoin wallet address, followed by a dot
.
and your worker name set during setup (e.g.bc1q...xyz.worker1
). -
Password: If required, enter the password. Otherwise, leave blank or use
x
. - Click Save to apply your settings.
Important: Do not use a Lightning wallet. Only enter a valid on-chain Bitcoin address that you control — otherwise, rewards will be lost.
Example for Public Pool:
- Stratum Host: public-pool.io
- Stratum Port: 21496
- User: bc1qfc5fgpy96z0q6ltvh99pcujec9mwzugv3zcste.gamma
- Password: x
Tip: We strongly recommend setting up a fallback pool in case your primary pool goes offline or becomes unreachable. This ensures your miner keeps working without downtime. A good option is eusolo.ckpool.org
(port 3333
), which is reliable and beginner-friendly.
Firmware Update (Optional but Recommended)
Keep your Bitaxe Gamma up to date with the latest firmware for best performance.
- Go to the official Bitaxe Web Flasher.
- Connect your device, select your model and board version, and start flashing immediately—no setup required.

Tips & Tricks
- Stable Wi-Fi: A strong, consistent Wi-Fi signal ensures uninterrupted mining.
- Clean Environment: Keep dust and debris away from vents and heatsinks to maximise cooling.
- Placement: Avoid enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces. Open airflow improves performance and longevity.
- Overclock: Boosting frequency and voltage can increase hashrate — but pushing too far may cause overheating or instability. See our Overclocking Guide for safe tuning tips.
